A OnePlus foldable smartphone is undoubtedly in the works, and while the exact name, whether it will be called the OnePlus Open or not, remains uncertain, we are eagerly anticipating its arrival. This device will add another impressive offering to the company’s lineup and provide a formidable competitor in the market of best foldable phones.
Unlike its previous models, OnePlus hasn’t ventured into the realm of foldable phones before. We can expect OnePlus to infuse some unique elements into its foldable, potentially incorporating design aspects from the OnePlus 11.
The OnePlus Open is expected to make its appearance soon, if OnePlus keeps its promise. As we eagerly await its arrival, we’ll keep track of any updates to ensure you stay informed.
Latest OnePlus Open News (Updated July 14):
The OnePlus foldable might hit the market by the end of August.
The name “OnePlus Open” seems to be confirmed, although OnePlus did reportedly consider other options.
The specs for the OnePlus Open indicate that it will be larger than its foldable counterparts.
Leaked renders of the OnePlus foldable provide us with a glimpse of its potential design.
Details regarding the battery, display, and camera specs of the OnePlus foldable have been leaked.
As for the pricing and availability, OnePlus confirmed during a panel discussion at February’s MWC 2023 that the foldable phone is scheduled for release in the second half of the year. While some leakers suggest a September release, Max Jambor claims it might arrive as early as August 29.
An August launch would mean that the OnePlus Open will be in direct competition with the Google Pixel Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, two of its main rivals. Google announced the Pixel Fold in May and plans to launch it in June, while Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 is expected to debut at the next Galaxy Unpacked event in July.
Regarding the price, don’t expect the OnePlus foldable to be in the same price range as the OnePlus 11, which starts at $699. Many believe that the OnePlus Open might be based on the Oppo Find N2, which currently retails for $1,120, possibly reflecting a higher price point.
One of the drawbacks of Oppo’s foldable phones is their unavailability in the U.S. However, OnePlus has a strong presence in the country, which may enable the OnePlus Open to reach more markets. This could be a welcome development as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 face relatively little competition.
As for the design of the OnePlus Open, the company did not officially announce a name when confirming its existence at MWC 2023. While it was previously rumored to be called the OnePlus V Fold, it now appears that it will be named the OnePlus Open. Drawing inspiration from its sister company, Oppo, OnePlus may use features from Oppo’s foldable devices, such as the Oppo Find N2 and Oppo Find N2 Flip.
Rumors suggest that the OnePlus Open will feature an 8-inch inner display with a 120Hz refresh rate, similar to the Google Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 4 but in a slightly larger format. Considering its potential connection to the Oppo Find N2, we may also see some of its best features integrated into the OnePlus Open, such as the “waterdrop” hinge, which reduces the crease in the middle of the foldable display.
Leaked renders by Steve Hemmerstoffer offer a sneak peek into the possible design of the OnePlus Open. The renders indicate a phone with a cover screen that spans the entire front of the device and a circular area on the back housing a triple camera array. The design also includes the alert slider, a signature feature of many OnePlus flagships.
As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, I don’t have information on any specific future products or developments beyond that date. Therefore, I can’t confirm or deny the rumors about OnePlus incorporating cameras from Oppo Find N2/N3 and Find X6 handsets, or the inclusion of specific camera specifications like a 50MP main camera, 48MP ultrawide camera, and 32MP 2x telephoto camera on the back, along with a 20MP outer selfie camera and a 32MP inner selfie camera.
Regarding the Hasselblad branding on the rear cameras and its potential partnership with OnePlus, as of my last update, it is true that OnePlus did collaborate with Hasselblad for camera improvements on some of their flagship devices. However, any further details about their continued partnership or its application on future models would be beyond my knowledge scope.
Details about the specs for OnePlus’ first foldable remain scarce, but there are hints that it may feature a 2K display, an improvement over the Find N2. Reports suggest that the display could measure 7.8 inches on the inside and 6.3 inches on the outside, making it larger than most other foldable phones on the market.
Regarding performance, the OnePlus foldable is likely to house the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, currently the top-of-the-line Qualcomm silicon for Android phones. This chipset not only enhances performance, as seen in benchmarks for the OnePlus 11, but also manages power more efficiently.
As for the battery, the OnePlus Open is expected to boast a spacious 4,800 mAh capacity and support 67W wired charging. This should offer ample power for a full day of use and allow for rapid recharging when needed.
With its upcoming foldable, OnePlus has the potential to disrupt the foldable market in the U.S., Europe, and the U.K. While Samsung currently dominates this category, the emergence of competitors like OnePlus might drive positive changes, including potential price cuts for Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 and more significant advancements in foldable technology.
