A freshly debuted Pokémon has emerged, presenting itself as a chipped teapot filled with the essence of matcha. This unique creation goes by the name of Poltchageist, cleverly blending the terms “poltergeist” and “matcha.” Evidently, it embodies the supernatural within tea.
This isn’t Pokémon’s first time playing with this concept; the introduction of Polteageist in the Pokémon Sword and Shield games, set in the British-themed Galar region, already touched upon this humor. Yet, it’s worth noting that tea holds significance beyond just British culture. The meticulous preparation of matcha is a time-honored tradition rooted in Japan for centuries. Thus, it’s only fitting that the forthcoming Pokémon Scarlet and Violet DLC transports us to the Kitakami region, inspired by Japan, where we encounter the intriguing concept of sentient and otherworldly matcha.
Poltchageist takes up residence in aged dwellings, occasionally mending broken items. Its unique ability, known as Hospitality, enables Poltchageist to restore a modest portion of its ally’s health when it enters battle. Intriguingly, after sprinkling a target with its fine powdery substance or having them consume food dusted with it, Poltchageist draws upon their life force, converting it into energy.
If the notion of life-absorbing matcha wasn’t eerie enough, The Pokémon Company has unveiled a video narrating the legend of this particular Pokémon, evidently shared as a spooky tale amongst local youths.
The legend follows the story of a tea master who was absolutely devoted to refining the art of the tea ceremony. His fixation was such that he alienated those around him; his ceaseless admonishments regarding the height of tea bowls and speaking while preparing tea left him isolated. His demise came with the words, “Regret is a bitter sip!” which served as his remarkably intense parting sentiment. Passed down through generations, his ill-tempered tea caddy was subsequently reborn as a grass and ghost type Pokémon. It took flight to haunt disgruntled tea enthusiasts and even supposedly ended the life of a woman who dared to text at the table, all through the agency of its matcha powder.
According to the intriguing Pokémon lore, parents in the Kitakami region warn their children that failing to finish their meals will incur the wrath of Poltchageist.
The forthcoming children’s game holds promises of more Pokémon mysteries as the first segment of the Scarlet and Violet DLC, titled “The Teal Mask,” releases on September 13. And as a silver lining, the return of Cramorant is on the horizon.
