Apple's New Convenience: Automatic Apple ID Passkey Assignment for iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma Users

Apple has introduced a new feature that will simplify the login process for users of iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma. Instead of requiring a traditional password, Apple will now assign a passkey to each user, allowing them to securely access their Apple accounts on the web.

This passkey system is already operational on iCloud.com and appleid.apple.com for individuals who are using the latest developer beta on their devices. In addition to Apple’s own platforms, this feature will also enable users to enjoy password less login on websites that support “Sign in with Apple.” Popular sites like PayPal, Shopify, and Kayak, which utilize passkeys, can be easily accessed by scanning a QR code with your iPhone.

For those unfamiliar with the concept, a passkey is a modern authentication method that relies on device-based verification through Face ID, Touch ID, or a PIN, eliminating the need for users to remember complex passwords. Passkeys do not replace passwords entirely but rather serve as an alternative way to sign in.

Moreover, once a passkey is generated, it is automatically synchronized across all of the user’s devices. However, it is important to note that for this synchronization to function, users must sign in to their devices using a shared Apple ID.

Notably, Google also supports passkey-based login for Google Accounts. In December of last year, the company introduced passkey support on Chrome for Windows, macOS, and Android. More recently, Google extended this capability to over 9 million organizations, enabling their users to sign in to Workspace and Google Cloud products using passkeys.
